Oh my. Oh my my. What a surprise to see a picture of John McCain in this morning's Globe and Mail In Photos. But not just any picture of the Republican candidate, but rather a wonderful capture of the ex P.O.W with Puerto Rican reggaeton star Daddy Yankee. The picture, as seen here, shows the two men boarding the Straight Talk Air plane...surely filled with half naked women and glasses of bubbly champaign - I mean, when the singer of Gasolina travels, he does it with style I guess.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have no problem with stars getting implicated in politics. I mean, just look at the stars that are backing Obama. In fact, I don't think I have any problem what so ever with this picture, I was just curious to know why on earth Yankee would be seen with McCain.
Then I headed to John McCain's website to see if I could find something on this unusual meeting and then, in the Media section - I found this article from the Los Angeles Times: Singer Daddy Yankee Endorses GOP's John McCain for President. Let me quote the article first :
"The audience of more than 100 students seemed slightly sleepy for McCain's opening remarks about the importance of voting and the national leaders who have come from Arizona. But they perked up when he promised a "special guest" and "a great American success story."
(...) McCain continued, saying, "One of his most famous songs, I know you're very familiar with, 'Gasolina' " -- here there were gasps of surprise from the crowd -- and then finally said, "Well, here he is: Daddy Yankee." "
And the article goes on to say the girls screamed as the latino star came out with bling-a-blazin'.
On the McCain website we can also find the official Press release which quotes the incredible speech made by Daddy (who's your Daddy?).
"It is a big pleasure that you guys invited me, and thanks to Senator McCain. And I am here endorsing Senator McCain because I believe in his ideals and his proposals to lead this nation. And like I said before, he has been a fighter for the Hispanic community, and I know that for me personally, I chose him as the best candidate because he has been a fighter for the immigration issue. So for me he is the best guy to lead this nation. And once again, I want to say thank you to everybody for the support it has given me in my entire career. This is a great honor sharing this beautiful morning with everybody. I am a man of few words but with a lot of action like I always said. Senator McCain, pleasure."
Really - Daddy is a man of deep words - a true politician. But still, although he brings up McCain's reputation as a fighter for the Hispanic community - I can't seem to fit the two together. Maybe McCain will now have half naked women dancing beside him on stage when he gives speeches ? That could work for him.
In case you've forgotten about Gasolina - here's the video. Imagine John McCain dancing to it.
