I was doing my daily website round up earlier when I saw an important news on Pitchfork: Coachella fectival finally announced its entire lineup!
I was excited, really. To any music fan, this is THE place to be - every year you can expect big names, surprises and even reunions (the festival saw the unexpected comeback of the Pixies, Rage Against the Machine and Jesus and Mary Chain among others in the last few years).
Every year, Math and I talk about it, get kind of jealous and dream of being there, and even if we cant really possibly find a way to go in the near future, we can still... well... dream.
I clicked the complete schedule to find... nothing exciting. First of all, Jack Johnson is headlining Friday night. Yep, that guy no one I know wants to hear even in a remote store when shopping. That same dude we cant stand to even see the album sleeve without having violent reactions will be performing prime time. Two things possible here: the Festival wants to appeal to a new kind of crowd or boring Johnson will undergo his worst performance in years having to please a record crowd that wants nothing to do with him.
Saturday night (live) will feature the anticipated return of Portishead. I cant wait to hear the new stuff they come up with (ten years in the making). I've been hungry for new trip hop music for years and kept returning relentlessly to their awesome eponymus record. Only thing is the band was officially in the studio for almost two years and already did a UK tour, so it was kind of expected and this is really no big surprise... Still, the night promises to be an amazing musical journey since Kraftwerk will be playing right before them.
Finally, Roger Waters will be headlining Sunday night. The former Pink Floyd legend toured America for the last two years, even came to Quebec City and played at least twice in every other major city. So that's no big news either, any fan already had the opportunity to attend his reinterpretation of the classic Dark Side of the Moon - and the sound experience must be way better in an indoor venue.
The rest is ok, but when you consider Metric ends up in bold on the poster it's a grand departure from the international bonanza featured in the previous editions. Dont get me wrong, Metric are a really nice band (I saw them live three times and was always satisfied) but there is no way they are headlining standard for an event such as Coachella.
The rest of the bands were either 2007 road warriors or will hit the market for most of 2008, so dont expect us to dream as much this year, which is sad, 'cause we need to sometimes. I hope this is just one bad vintage and things will be uphill again next year, but sincerely Coachella you're saddening me.
Is it an omen? Can we expect the 2008 year in music be this dull and/or disappointing?
Let's start dreaming again: the promoters will hold a similar festival at Liberty State Park in New Jersey August 8 to 10, meaning a lot more time to positively surprise us, but also for once a real chance for us to be there.
And let's dream further: Portishead in Montreal? We'd probably be willing to sleep outside to be sure to attend. Let's be honest, we might be freezing our a** right now but summer's beautiful, meaning a potential dream night.
